The Kedarnath Temple, perched at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft), is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is only open to the general public for six months a year.
When Does the Temple Open?
The temple gates generally open in late April or early May, on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, and close on the day of Bhai Dooj (around Diwali in October/November).
Best Months to Visit
- May to June: This is the peak season. The weather is relatively pleasant, making the 16km trek from Gaurikund manageable. Expect large crowds.
- September to October: After the monsoon, the air is crisp, the skies are clear, and the natural beauty is at its peak. This is arguably the best and safest time to visit.
Monsoon Warning (July to August)
It is strongly advised to avoid the trek during the monsoon months due to the high risk of landslides, slippery paths, and roadblocks in the region.
